Meetings

First team meeting 31 March to 4 April 2025 in Bern

Highlights:

  • Discussion of preliminary results from QUOCA runs shows that QBO descends lower in interactive chemistry run
  • Observational sub team has started the processing of satellite datasets
  • Discussion of a theoretical/numerical framework to analyse results

Second team meeting 15 to 19 June 2025 in Bern

Addition of Rachel Atlas and Martin Moreno Delgado to the team.

Highlights:

  • There are at least 10 different plausible pathways by which ozone can affect the Quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) in the stratosphere
  • We first need robust ways to quantify the QBO in observations and models to standardise our analysis and have settled on an agreed set of metrics. The observational team will construct composites of key quantities and make this available to the rest of the community
  • The theory sub team is close to producing a working numerical model that can be used to explore the feedback and decide between some of the plausible pathways.
  • The chemistry sub team has made good progress in understanding the the key reactions involved in the QBO
  • Both sub teams will benefits from the observational composites in the interpretation of their findings
