Current outputs and upcoming events:
-
- Short project summary (Preprint): Monitor indicators of genetic diversity from space using Earth Observation data
- “Roadmap” for using EO in genetic diversity monitoring (Preprint): Genes from space: Leveraging Earth Observation satellites to monitor genetic diversity
- Presentation at the GEO BON Global Conference, Monitoring Biodiversity for Action, October 10-13, 2023
- Workshop and presentation at the World Biodiversity Forum 2024, June 16-21, 2024
- Participation at CBD COP 16 by contributing to a booth with G-BiKE and an event with GEO BON’s BON-in-a-Box, Oct 21 – Nov 1, 2024
- Workshop hosted online from ISSI Bern introducing an audience of voluntary testers to the pilot version of our tool, January 22, 2025: Follow links to English and Spanish introductory presentations.
- Workshop on essential biodiversity variables (EBVs) and indicators for reporting with OBSGESSION and presentation of the Genes from Space prototype tool at BioSpace25, February 10-14, 2025
Our expected outputs (work started July 2023):
- Assess potential of EO on reach, evenness, and impact of genetic diversity monitoring and conservation and propose steps required for use of data from spaceborne imaging spectroscopy missions (CHIME, SBG, EnMap, PRISMA) for genetic diversity monitoring
- Propose workflow to incorporate EO data into genetic monitoring indicators and EBVs and demonstrate cases from existing data
- Present results to Parties and policy-makers and public in outreach materials
- Coordinate with GEO BON and the COST action on Genomic Biodiversity Knowledge, G-BiKE (we have members in both organizations) to integrate outputs into policy, for example in key events such as meetings of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Digital Sequence Information on Genetic Resources of the Convention of Biological Diversity
