{"id":6,"date":"2026-07-27T13:59:05","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T13:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/teams.issibern.ch\/small-scaleeruptions\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2026-07-28T08:18:25","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T08:18:25","slug":"proposal","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/teams.issibern.ch\/small-scaleeruptions\/proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<br \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: right;\">[<a href='<a href=\"https:\/\/teams.issibern.ch\/small-scaleeruptions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/172\/2026\/07\/ISSI-BJ_Proposal_v7.pdf'>PDF version<\/a>]<\/h3>\n<p>\n        <b>Team leader:<\/b> Jie Chen, National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China<\/p>\n<p>        <b>Co-Leaders:<\/b> Robertus Erdely, SP2RC\/U. of Sheffield and Nour Rawafi, APL\/JHU, USA<\/p>\n<p>        <b>Research Domain:<\/b> Space Sciences (Solar and Heliospheric Physics)<\/p>\n<p>        <b>ISSI location:<\/b> Beijing and Bern<\/p>\n<p><h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aim and Goals<\/h3>\n<p>\n        Our over-arching aim with this ISSI programme is to leap forward in understanding the dynamic processes of<br \/>\n        different types of small-scale solar eruptions through the combined analysis of observations with high spatial,<br \/>\n        high temporal, and high spectral resolution with advanced numerical modeling.<br \/>\n        Specific goals to achieve this aim are:\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        (1) Study the formation mechanism of spicules, jets and brightening events.<\/p>\n<p>        (2) Analyze the relationship between spicules and plasma outflow and link it to the origin of solar wind.<\/p>\n<p>        (3)  Identify the fine structures of spicules and brightenings,<br \/>\n        and pinpoint the key difference between spicules and jets.<\/p>\n<p>        (4)  Clarify the heating mechanism of small-scale eruptions and the physics behind it.\n    <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Timeliness<\/h3>\n<p>\n        The proposed work is extremely important and timely mainly because the necessary high-quality observations are<br \/>\n        only just becoming available.<br \/>\n        Data with unprecedented high-quality and high-resolution provided by a fleet of space telescopes (with support<br \/>\n        from ground-based telescopes) were very scarce in the past,<br \/>\n        but hold the key to uncover the different aspects of different types of small-scale eruptions.<br \/>\n        The unique combination of in-situ and remote sensing telescopes with a broad temperature coverage is paramount<br \/>\n        for this project and has only been available now.<br \/>\n        Combined with recent progress in models and ongoing research carried out by team members makes this project most<br \/>\n        timely.<br \/>\n        This ISSI team is uniquely positioned to undertake the challenging tasks proposed here.\n    <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Expected outcome<\/h3>\n<p>\n        Besides the scientific progress made during the collaboration,<br \/>\n        the Team expects to publish 2-3 research papers in leading field-specific journals (e.g.,<em> ApJ(L), A&#038;A, Solar<br \/>\n        Physics, JGR <\/em>or<em> PRL<\/em>) and 1-2 reviews.<br \/>\n        If it is possible, we also aim for one more comprehensive view is in Year 1 in the Chinese international journal<br \/>\n        of <em>Res. Astron. Astrophys<\/em>,<br \/>\n        and a more concise one in is in Year 2 in Space Sci. Rev.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        We also anticipate that our project will facilitate <em>further funded scientific collaborations <\/em>and joint<br \/>\n        grant proposal activities at bi- or multi-lateral levels between Team members,<br \/>\n        which will allow the participants to continue partnership through, e.g.,<br \/>\n        Horizon Europe or Lorentz\/Kavli Center projects, or various national collaborative programmes (e. g. Two one-week meetings are planned,<br \/>\n        one in Beijing in Year 1 and another in Bern in Year 2.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        We anticipate the first meeting taking place in the first half of 2025.<br \/>\n        Between the first and second meeting we will address O1 and O2 to achieve the most promising observational and<br \/>\n        modelling (data or computational) approaches to be agreed upon in the first meeting.<br \/>\n        The investigation findings will be consolidated during the second meeting.<br \/>\n        The outcome of this synergy will form the basis of the proposed second article intended for <em>Space Sci<\/em>. Rev.<br \/>\n        The Team Leaders, each with their own expertise as, but in coherence with the others, will monitor the progress.<br \/>\n        If necessary, additional e-conference calls will be arranged for coordination.<br \/>\n        At the second meeting,<br \/>\n        we will also analyze and synthesize the results of the research devised since the first meeting,<br \/>\n        and compile the outline of the second review text. It is also proposed to hold an invitation-only externally<br \/>\n        funded workshop adjacent to the second one-week ISSI meeting where we will further discuss with external experts<br \/>\n        the open issues and their potential solutions.\n    <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Added value provided by ISSI<\/h3>\n<p>\n        The Team consists of scientists from a carefully selected but wide range of institutions from all over the world,<br \/>\n        located in seven different countries.<br \/>\n        The stimulating research environment and excellent facilities provided by ISSI,<br \/>\n        already experienced by several Team Members,<br \/>\n        together with the convenient geographical location for the Chinese\/Asian participants,<br \/>\n        makes this site ideal for the proposed programme.<br \/>\n        We feel that, the most important benefits are to<br \/>\n        i) <em>get together face-to-face<\/em> and exploit the<br \/>\n        ii) <em>complementary expertise of the team<\/em> (e.g., MHD modelling, image analysis and processing) to stage<br \/>\n        focused and detailed discussions<br \/>\n        dedicated to the aims\/objectives iii) in a relaxed and friendly environment.<br \/>\n        Such an environment is often most beneficial to make true progress,<br \/>\n        ironing out differences in views and raising in-depth further questions,<br \/>\n        not to mention getting down and resolving the most challenging details that impede progress today.<br \/>\n        The progress made will be exploited for further synergistic activities,<br \/>\n        possibly at a much higher effort level.<br \/>\n        Previous remarkable examples of successful collaborations are the two Chinese-European solar meetings<br \/>\n        (2017 and 2019) that signaled a new era in Chinese-European collaborations.<br \/>\n        Last, but not least, our Team proposes to lay the groundwork towards another joint Chinese-European gathering,<br \/>\n        more focused on the dynamics of astrophysical plasmas.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        <b>Venue:<\/b><br \/>\n        The Team will have its two scheduled Project Meetings (PMs) at ISSI\/ISSI-BJ, respectively,<br \/>\n        while adjacent to the second meeting we propose to hold a closed, by invitation only,<br \/>\n        externally funded 3-day mini-Workshop (max 25 participants in total) in Beijing,<br \/>\n        to shape a view on the future course of the initiative.<br \/>\n        Invitation of a few self-supported experts is envisaged.\n    <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">References:<\/h3>\n<p>\n        1.
