Our goal is to understand the interplay between gas, stars, and supermassive black holes during “cosmic noon” – the epoch approximately 10 billion years ago when galaxy growth and evolution peaked.

In a recent publication (Liboni et al. 2026), we identified neutral gas outflows in galaxies at z ~ 2 using Ca II and Na I absorption lines. About half of the galaxies studied show blueshifted absorption, which is clear evidence that gas is being driven out, likely by intense star formation or active black holes, with mass outflow rates reaching up to ~50 solar masses per year. Understanding outflows is important because they regulate how galaxies grow by controlling star formation, redistributing heavy elements, and shaping their evolution.

During the first meeting, we developed a novel approach to process our JWST observations. The JWST spectra cover only a small fraction of each galaxy, and a careful analysis of both imaging and spectroscopic data is required to derive robust physical properties for the galaxies. In the second meeting, we used our newly processed data to reconstruct the past histories of massive galaxies, revealing how galaxies transition from actively star-forming to dormant. Understanding this transition is one of the central unsolved problems in galaxy evolution. The processed data will be released to the community (Belli et al. submitted) and is the basis of multiple publications in preparation (Bugiani et al., Brown et al., Gao et al.). The improved reduction techniques will also be applied to other JWST surveys led by the team (GO 5427; PI Davies and GO 11892; PI Belli).

The ISSI meetings also facilitated the development of three new approved observing programs with ALMA and JWST. These programs will allow us to expand our research and understand how far outflows extend across galaxies, how gas expulsion impacts the supply of fuel to form new stars, and how the role of outflows changes across the Universe’s history.

Our team studies distant galaxies by combining observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile.
