Meetings

  • Kick-Off Meeting (KOM) – online – 1st June 2023
Main afforded points: self-Introduction of participants, scientific objectives and methodology in the Team, organization and practical aspects and outreach activities. Small scientific discussion on the proper methodologies in this research topic.

  • Second meeting – online – 12th June 2023
Main afforded points: introduction of the Early Career Scientists in the team and summary of the KOM aspects. A small discussion on the importance of atmospheric data integrated with ionospheric observations, especially from China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES) in order to understand the LAIC mechanisms.

  • First meeting in Bern and online – from 11 to 15 September 2023
This was the first full ISSI meeting of our group. It was attended by 19 people (4 researchers in Bern, 10 active online people and 5 student online followers) from 7 different countries.
We divided the days for the topic, but always discussed the relationships between the different subjects. On Monday 11, we discussed the LAIC mechanisms and atmospheric anomalies. Seismological investigation, prediction and hazard assessment and TEC and ionospheric investigations were discussed on Tuesdays 12. Wednesday 13 was dedicated to presentations of a single earthquake and volcano eruption investigations and other general discussions on the LAIC mechanism. On Friday 14 we afforded interesting results from ESA Swarm and CNSA (in cooperation with ASI) CSES-01 missions to investigate the earthquakes and ionospheric environment. We concluded our meeting with an interesting discussion and future plans on Friday 15.

Welcome drink at ISSI in Bern succesfully starting the meeting!

  • Second meeting in Beijing and online – from 21 to 25 October 2024
This was our group’s second full ISSI meeting. It was attended by 23 people (6 researchers in ISSI-Beijing, 8 team members online, 1 professor, and 8 students attended online) from 7 different countries. We met again after about one year from the first meeting. We had several scientific discussions on Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (LAIC) related to earthquake occurrence, volcano eruptions and other natural hazards, as well as the LAIC induced by radioactive accidents. We afforded the use of several methodologies to properly analyse the data from geophysical and statistical points of view. We discussed the possible role of the solar and space weather activity in the earthquake occurrence. We also looked deeply at several results in seismic active areas (such as Japan and China) detecting the release of gases such as CO and radon. We also discussed the importance of checking the earthquake catalogue for statistical analysis, its eventual declustering and possible biases in the statistical analyses. We concluded our meeting on Friday 25 October afternoon and we will see again in Bern for our third meeting.
