dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">presence<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">water<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ice<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">both<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">surface<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">subsurface<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">planetary<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">bodies,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">like<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Ceres, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Moon and Mercury has been demonstrated in recent studies.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">In particular, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">water ice is present in some permanent or semi-permanent shadowed areas, for example on the rims of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">craters, where the local topography and illumination conditions favour the presence of perennial water<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ice.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The presence of water ice not only has great significance from an astrobiological point of view, but <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">it also provides important information about a body\u2019s internal evolution.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">For these reasons, it is critical<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">evaluate<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">stability<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">water<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ice<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">surface<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">or<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">shallow<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">subsurface<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">planetary<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">bodies. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Wherever<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ice<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">unstable,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">example<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">due<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">local<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">illumination<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">conditions<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">or<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">impact<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">events,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">it <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">can lead to the formation of a transient exosphere.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">scientific<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">literature<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">offers<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">wide<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">range<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">one<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">dimensional<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">thermophysical<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">models<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">However, no complex numerical modeling has integrated an Eulerian approach, which <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">provides a complete thermophysical representation of the simulated sites, with a Lagrangian approach, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">which simulates the likely water vapour emission, as well as the interaction of volatiles with the regolith<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(dust).<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">A rigorous study of the evolution of a mixture of vapour-ice particles emitted by the surface is <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">motivated by two aspects:<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">I) water emissions can be observed as transient phenomena; II) the pressure<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">temperature<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">conditions<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">present<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">allow<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">processes<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">both<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sublimation<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">recombination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">This<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">research project aims to bridge this gap with the following three-pronged approach:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Application<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">representative<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ice-rich<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sites<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Moon,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Ceres<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Mercury<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">by<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(a)<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">preparing<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">digital terrain model (DTM) in a specific format compatible with the above numerical modeling, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(b)<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">calculating<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">corresponding<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">illumination<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">conditions.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Temperature<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">maps<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sur<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">face\/subsurface<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">function<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">thermal<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">inertia<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">will<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">be<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">used<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">evaluate<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">lifetime<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">surface <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Application of a 3-D finite element method (FEM) thermophysical model, based on digital terrain <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">models (DTM) and illumination conditions at reference sites.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Implementation of a code based on the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) scheme to study<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the water vapour emission and the volatile-dust interaction, given the temperature maps produced <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">by the FEM model.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Water vapour emission may be triggered both by the local illumination and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">by impact events.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">This synthetic description of the physical characteristics of ice-rich areas on planetary surfaces will <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">provide<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">critically-needed<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">theoretical<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">support<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">both<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">recent<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">current<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">space<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">missions<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(e.g.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Dawn, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Rosetta, BepiColombo, ExoMars) and to future missions.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Ice-rich areas on the Moon, for example, are<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">primary targets for future human
