{"id":23,"date":"2026-05-22T10:43:37","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T10:43:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/teams.issibern.ch\/hotjupiteratmospheres\/?page_id=23"},"modified":"2026-05-22T10:44:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T10:44:37","slug":"progress","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/teams.issibern.ch\/hotjupiteratmospheres\/progress\/","title":{"rendered":"Progress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In March 2023, we had our first ISSI in-person meeting in Bern.<\/p>\n<p>We discussed:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; An overview of each GCM and a comparison of the \u201cchemistry-free\u201d results<br \/>\n&#8211; Discuss and decide on the chemical and radiation schemes<br \/>\n&#8211; Discuss the details and challenges in implementation<\/p>\n<p>We have finalized the benchmark tests as follows:<\/p>\n<p><b>Test description:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Model boundaries:<\/b><br \/>\n&#8211; The lowest layer needs to be at least 100 bar. Use convective adjustment.<br \/>\n&#8211; Use approximately 2-4 degrees or equivalents for the horizontal resolution<br \/>\n&#8211; Use the least damping and sponge layers that can keep the simulation stable<\/p>\n<p><b>Test 1 (passive tracer):<\/b><br \/>\n0. Run the nominal GCM until the steady state<br \/>\n1. After the steady state has been achieved, initializing passive tracers from the dayside equatorial region below 1 bar: for the region below 1 bar, +\/- 30 degree longitude and +\/- 30 degree latitude, fix a uniform mixing ratio of passive tracers from.<br \/>\n2. Report 0, 1, 50, 100 days after the tracers are initialized<br \/>\n(In practice, Test 1 is embedded in Test 2 using an inert gas)<\/p>\n<p><b>Test 2 (double-grey with mini-chem):<\/b><br \/>\n0. Run the nominal GCM until the steady state<br \/>\n1. Use the following constant opacities:<br \/>\nkappa_IR = \u00a00.003, kappa_shortwave = 0.00085 (m^2 kg^-1)<br \/>\n2. For internal heating, relax the temperature at the bottom toward the temperature given by an adiabat with Tint = 350K. A relaxation time of 10^5 sec is used in Steinrueck 2023 but choose whatever works better. In the case that the temperature relaxation at the bottom is difficult to implement, use Tint = 350 K internal flux instead.<br \/>\n3. After the steady state has been achieved, include the chemical tracers.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><b>Test 3 (correlated-k with mini-chem):<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This is the same test as Test 2, but the correlated-k opacities are used for the RT.<br \/>\nThe &#8220;mutual species&#8221; among all models to include are:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>&#8211; H2O<br \/>\n&#8211; Na<br \/>\n&#8211; K<br \/>\n&#8211; CO2<br \/>\n&#8211; CH4<br \/>\n&#8211; NH3<br \/>\n&#8211; CO<br \/>\n&#8211; HCN<br \/>\n&#8211; CIA H2-He<br \/>\n&#8211; CIA H2-H2<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In March 2023, we had our first ISSI in-person meeting in Bern.
