Scientific Goals

A key observational feature solar and stellar flare energy release is the presence of intermittent pulsations and oscillatory patterns, known collectively as quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs). To date, the underlying physical mechanism responsible for the generation of QPPs remains unknown, however, a full description of the phenomenon is critical in order to fully understand flare energy release and work towards a unified solar flare model.

Our ISSI team will bring together key modelling and observational experts to tackle this outstanding solar physics problem. We will take advantage of advances in observational analysis tools, new solar and stellar data sources (e.g. Solar Orbiter/STIX, and TESS), coupled with advanced numerical models of flares that have recently been able to naturally produce quasi-periodic emission signatures.
